CHOLESTEROL:

Cholesterol is required to build and maintain membranes; it modulates membrane fluidity over the range of physiological temperatures. The hydroxyl group on cholesterol interacts with the polar head groups of the membrane phospholipids and sphingolipids, while the bulky steroid and the hydrocarbon chain are embedded in the membrane, alongside the nonpolar fatty acid chain of the other lipids. Through the interaction with the phospholipid fatty acid chains, cholesterol increases membrane packing, which reduces membrane fluidity.[5] In this structural role, cholesterol reduces the permeability of the plasma membrane to neutral solutes,[6] protons, (positive hydrogen ions) and sodium ions.[7]

Within the cell membrane, cholesterol also functions in intracellular transport, cell signaling and nerve conduction. Cholesterol is essential for the structure and function of invaginated caveolae and clathrin-coated pits, including caveola-dependent and clathrin-dependent endocytosis. The role of cholesterol in such endocytosis can be investigated by using methyl beta cyclodextrin (MβCD) to remove cholesterol from the plasma membrane. Recently, cholesterol has also been implicated in cell signaling processes, assisting in the formation of lipid rafts in the plasma membrane. Lipid raft formation brings receptor proteins in close proximity with high concentrations of second messenger molecules.[8] In many neurons, a myelin sheath, rich in cholesterol, since it is derived from compacted layers of Schwann cell membrane, provides insulation for more efficient conduction of impulses.[9]

Within cells, cholesterol is the precursor molecule in several biochemical pathways. In the liver, cholesterol is converted to bile, which is then stored in the gallbladder. Bile contains bile salts, which solubilize fats in the digestive tract and aid in the intestinal absorption of fat molecules as well as the fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K. Cholesterol is an important precursor molecule for the synthesis of vitamin D and the steroid hormones, including the adrenal gland hormones cortisol and aldosterone, as well as the sex hormones progesterone, estrogens, and testosterone, and their derivatives.

Some research indicates cholesterol may act as an antioxidant.[10]

Wild Reishi Drops

Reishi Mushroom is currently recognized as one of the most important and beneficial tonic herbs in the world. However the public is generally not aware that there are many types of Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) available, and the quality and effects may vary widely. Most of the Reishi mushroom products on the market are made from the mycelia of the mushroom, not the fruiting body (the head). However, traditionally, the fruiting body (the part of the mushroom we generally think of as a “mushroom”) is recognized as the most valuable and beneficial part of the Reishi. Because of its vast popularity throughout the world, Reishi is now cultivated. The best cultivated Reishi mushrooms are grown on natural forest logs, not in polyethylene bags filled with a mash of rice hulls and sawdust (as is the most common practice in America). This log-grown Reishi is known as “original wood” Reishi, and Dragon Herbs Duanwoodä (literally: original wood) Reishi is grown on high-mountain logs from Chiangbai Mountain. These logs are cut down for environmental purposes and are the perfect wood for growing Reishi. Duanwoodä Reishi recognized as the most potent Reishi in the world.

Originally, however, Reishi was of course collected in the wild. Reishi has been the most revered herb in Asia since pre-historic times. Sages and emperors sought this herb to confer health, well being, good fortune and wisdom. Wild Reishi is a very rare herb. It is not possible to collect very large amounts of it. It is special because it is totally natural. In the wild, it is a superb collector of Qi and Shen energy. It is called the “Herb of Spiritual Potency” and the “Mushroom of Immortality.”

Dragon Herbs has developed a relationship with local herb collectors in the high altitude regions of Chiangbai Mountain, the Di Tao (original) source of Reishi. These amazing people spend their entire lives scouring the remote pristine forests looking for the rarest herbs –wild Reishi, wild Ginseng, wild mountain Ant, wild Asparagus, and so on. We are fortunate to have a steady but limited supply of truly wild Reishi mushroom. These mushrooms are not planted or wildcrafted by humans. They grow where they will, where they are perfectly suited, and as a result develop great power.

Dragon Herbs Wild Reishi Drops is made from 100% pure WILD Reishi Mushroom fruiting bodies. This is exactly the same herb that has been revered as the “Mushroom of Immortality.” We do not use any mycelia, and there are no additives of any sort in the production of Dragon Herbs Wild Reishi Drops. Dragon Herbs uses only Ganoderma lucidum fruiting bodies – we do not mix species in this product.

Wild Reishi, because it is WILD, possesses more Shen than cultivated varieties of Reishi. Most hot-house Reishi, which is usually made from only the mycelia, possesses little Shen, if any. Duanwood Reishi, which is grown on natural logs in the pristine air at high altitude on Chiangbai Mountain Reishi plantations, possesses considerable Shen. Those who consume Duanwoodä Reishi know that the herb is calming, centering and uplifting. It is an herb that will develop Shen and the concomitant wisdom. However, no herb on earth is more capable of supporting the development of Shen than WILD Reishi.

Wild Reishi is much more difficult to analyze and quantify than cultivated Reishi. The mushrooms grow on different varieties of trees, and grow in different environments on the mountain. This variety is perhaps of special value, but it means that there is no may to standardize the product. Dragon Herbs does mix mushrooms collected from various environments so that the wildness of the Reishi is accentuated. Furthermore, the mushrooms are of course not all of the same age. Some are grandfather Reishi, some are middle aged, and some are young (though we only use mature Reishi fruiting bodies in our product). This age difference does mean that the chemical constituents in different mushrooms will be different. We, of course, consider this to be a benefit.

Dragon Herbs Wild Reishi Drops is one of the most wonderful herbal products available in the world. It is produced with exacting care to extract both water and alcohol soluble components and to protect the energy of the mushrooms. It is a very potent 8:1 hydro-ethanolic extract. That means that it takes 8 pounds of these wild mushrooms to make just one gallon of finished extract.
